For first time visitors to Britain, the initial reaction to driving, or being driven, on the "wrong side" of seemingly narrow roads is one of minor alarm at least. Don't worry, though, the British are used to it and, in general, they are fairly tolerant drivers.

When heading to or from Central London it may seem from a road atlas that a direct run on the A23/M23 through Croydon is a good idea. It very rarely is, and even when the M25 traffic is moving at a snail's pace, it will probably still be quicker to get into London via the M25 and one of the major arterial roads than by following the direct route. During the late afternoon, a journey time of 2 hours from Gatwick to Central London is common.
