It can be very difficult to decide just how long it will take to get to Gatwick Airport if you are travelling by road, and you would be well advised to use the rail network if at all possible.
The majority of road approaches to Gatwick from the north involve using the M25 and the M23, both of which have predictable hold-ups at peak times and their fair share of unpredictable hold-ups. Even a minor accident on the motorways can cause instant tailbacks that take half an hour to clear, and at peak times the traffic slows to a snail's pace, particularly if you are travelling in any direction on the south west quadrant of the M25. If you get to Gatwick early, there is plenty to keep you occupied before your flight departs.
By far the most predictable way of getting to the Airport is by rail, especially if you are travelling from London. The trains are fast, frequent and comfortable, and with Gatwick having its own Rail Station it takes only minutes to reach check-in after leaving the train. No queues, no hassle, no parking fees and predictable timing are all good reasons for planning to get to the Airport by train. There are good connections with many of the other UK airports, and in particular with Heathrow. Almost all the coaches arriving at Gatwick have called at Heathrow Airport, and trains connect with Luton and Stansted.
When using an off-airport car park it is advisable to allow at least 30 minutes for the transfer to the Terminal area.
At South Terminal, both the Departure and Arrival concourses are on Level 3. If you are dropping someone off by car, signs will direct you to this level, but if you are collecting someone, or being collected, you will be directed to the ground floor level. From whichever direction you enter Level 3, Check-in and Departures will be to your left and Arrivals to your right. Most shops and restaurants in the South Terminal are located in the Gatwick Village, which is above the main concourse.
North Terminal is laid out differently. The Arrivals concourse is on the ground floor and the Departures concourse is on the second floor. Between the two is The Avenue shopping mall.
