Road Signs

The majority of road signs will be easily understood as they are based on an internationally agreed system. Circular signs give orders and prohibitions, and if they have a blue background their instructions are compulsory. Triangular signs give warning of road features or hazards ahead, and rectangular signs give general information if they are blue and, if they are green, provide directional information on primary traffic routes.

Circular signs carry both orders and prohibitions, and those with a blue background, such as the "Keep Left" sign, are compulsory. These details are all in the Department of Transport's book called "The Highway Code" which costs about £1.00 and is widely available in book stores. It contains all you need to know about driving in the United Kingdom.

Red triangular signs carry warning messages such as that for a roundabout and traffic lights
