Speed Limits

National speed limits are set, and are assumed to be in force unless signs show that other limits apply. Speed limit signs show the limit in miles per hour, which is the primary indication on the speedometers of British cars.

Speed limits vary according to the location and the type of vehicle being driven. The limits for cars and motorcycles are 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways, 60 mph on single carriageway roads, and 30 mph in built-up areas unless other limits apply.

Enforcement of the limits is quite strict, especially in urban areas but, in general, you are safe if you "go with the flow". Should you be unfortunate enough to get pulled over for speeding, you will be required to show the Police officers all relevant paperwork pertaining to the vehicle and your right to drive it. Any further action will be at the discretion of the Police, and you should be aware that there is no on-the-spot fine system anywhere in the UK.

Speed limits are standard across the UK and are: 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways; 60 mph on other roads unless otherwise indicated; 30 mph in built-up areas.

Speed Limits

In general you should "go with the flow" but be aware that traffic speed is monitored by radar, patrol cars and cameras. There is no "spot fine" system in the UK but if you receive a ticket for a violation it will be followed up.
