Rail Travel

The usual complexities of the railway fare system have been compounded by the recent division of the national network into separate companies who each have their own method of calculating fares. The preferred route, time of day, period of return and class of travel are all factors that will affect the price paid for a journey, and quite often a return ticket proves cheaper than its one-way counterpart. In spite of their partisan interests, each company is required by law to quote the most favourable route and price for a journey involving different companies' territory, but various surveys have shown that the system has not yet been perfected.

Another effect of the privatisation of the rail network is that any semblance of coordination that may have existed in the national timetable has now disappeared. The so called connecting train will not wait for the local feeder line, so try not to cut things too fine if you have a connection to make.

In fairness, the trains seem to be more punctual than they used to be a few years ago, and generally they are a good bit cleaner and more comfortable. Most intercity trains have restaurant service and a licensed buffet, and most have payphones.

The good news is that the Rail Air coach link is fast and comfortable, and as an integral part of the rail journey, you can pay for the coach ride in with your rail ticket.

If you intend to continue your journey by train, you should call 0171 3877070 for national rail information and fares, or visit a travel desk at Heathrow.

Freeflow Heathrow, BAA Heathrow's ongoing campaign to get customers to leave their cars at home, has already made Heathrow the world leader in numbers of passengers arriving and leaving the airport by public transport. Around 34% of Heathrow's non-connecting passengers use public transport to get to the airport, and BAA's target is 50%. There is a lot of investment in the local transport infrastructure, and it will all be needed to maintain the current high levels of service as Heathrow's passenger count continues to grow.

Need to change trains? A good place to transfer to the District Line for Paddington is Barons Court where you need only cross the platform at which you arrive. Change to the Victoria Line at Green Park for the Euston mainline station. The Piccadilly Line goes direct from Heathrow to King's Cross/St Pancras.
